- Alonso Angel (1923-1994)
Exiled in France since 1947, Angel Alonso is a French painter of Spanish origin. The sole source of his inspiration was nature. For him, the earth was the most beautiful of landscapes, observed in its changing and colorful rhythm of the seasons.
Inseparable friend of the well-known Spanish philosopher María Zambrano, Alonso cared very little about his «career». Out of pride as well as modesty, he stayed away from the galleries for more than 20 years, intending to preserve the integrity of his work. In 1952, Alonso preferred not to exhibit at the prestigious Jeanne Bucher Gallery.
Nowadays, thanks to the interest by a number of museums and galleries, the quality of Alonso’s work is recognised both in France and in Spain for its strength and radicality. In 2009, the Reina Sofia Museum bought a large number of his works while the Spanish State received his archives (writings, correspondence, documents), with the prospect of a foundation in Santander.
